US DOT Secretary Norman Mineta unveiled a series of steps aimed at "reducing potential gridlock and delays" during the peak summer travel period, including creation of new air traffic "express lanes" along many of the nation's most heavily congested routes. In a change from summers past, when weather-delayed aircraft at congested airports waited to be scheduled into the normal traffic flow, FAA and the airlines will adjust routes throughout the airspace system and hold aircraft briefly on the ground to free up vital air traffic lanes. …
