Qantas to launch LCC in Singapore.(Brief Article)

Qantas plans to counter emerging low-cost competition in Southeast Asia by establishing its own budget venture in Singapore by year end with the support of Temasek Holdings, the majority shareholder of Singapore Airlines that already is an investor with SIA in another low-cost startup, Tiger Airways.

Qantas CEO Geoff Dixon said the operation will serve a range of Asian cities within 5 hr. of Singapore, initially operating a leased fleet of four 737-800s or A320s, growing to 20 aircraft over a three-year period.

Qantas will take 49.9% of the new carrier and will provide $550 million ($29.7 million) of the S$100 million capital base. …
