US Airways plans consolidation of some Regional operations.(Regional News)(mergers)

US Airways will combine two of its wholly owned Regional airlines, Allegheny and Piedmont, by the end of March. The decision to merge the two, both of which operate turboprops, came on the heels of the cash-strapped Major's saying it is considering selling off some of its assets. "Turboprop aircraft will still have a role in our network, but it is inefficient to have two wholly owned Dash 8 operators with duplicative overhead functions for a shrinking part of the company," US Airways Express VP Bruce Ashby explained.

Company officials said they would prefer to merge Allegheny into Piedmont. Allegheny, based near Harrisburg, Pa., employs 1,421 and operates 41 Dash 8s serving 38 cities in the mid-Atlantic region. …
