Japan Air System was forced to cancel hundreds of flights beginning Jan. 19 after it grounded its fleet of 25 MD-81s and MD-87s to inspect their JT8D-217 engines for damage. The carrier, which will be merged into Japan Airlines System in April, launched the inspections after finding damage to stator vanes in the high-pressure compressors on two aircraft. …
