The crash of a Flash Airlines 737-300 on Jan. 3 illuminated gaps in Europe's regulatory safety net after it turned out that the charter carrier had been banned from Swiss airspace for safety violations but that the information had been withheld from the public. All 148 persons onboard the aircraft were killed when it plunged into the Red Sea shortly after taking off from Sharm el-Sheikh en route to Cairo. Most of the passengers were French holidaymakers returning from the resort, which is located at the tip of the Sinai Peninsula. The Egyptian airline was operating the flight on behalf of a French tour operator. Flash officials have denied that they operated unsafely and as of mid-Jan, investigators had not revealed a possible hypothesis for the accident, which occurred in very deep waters, making recovery efforts extemely challenging. …
