Qantas will acquire 23 177-seat A320s for its new standalone low-fare venture, CEO Geoff Dixon confirmed early last month. The carrier, named Jetstar, will launch in May with AS100 million ($72.7 million) in startup capital operating on trunk as well as leisure routes. To be based in Melbourne, Jetstar initially will fly 717-200s under the shell of Impulse Airlines, the former low-cost carrier that it absorbed in 2001 and that since has operated as part of the Qantaslink regional division. …
