Greece and Turkey set aside their centuries-old enmity in order to permit a redesign of airspace throughout the Balkan region in Dec. ahead of the 2004 Summer Olympics to be held in Athens. Currently, aircraft flying to and from Turkey are prohibited from entering Greek airspace and vice versa, resulting in circuitous routings and increased congestion. The agreement will result in implementation of a new route network mainly within the Athens and Istanbul flight information regions, according to IATA, which with ICAO helped broker the deal. …
