EC to redress 'state aid' for non-EU airlines.

In a response largely to unhappiness over the level of government aid given to US airlines following 9/11, the EU Transport Council voted unanimously last month to grant the EC authority to impose duties on airlines from non-EU member states that in the EC's opinion have benefited from state subsidies. According to a statement from the Commission, "duties will be calculated on the basis of the amount of aid granted to those airlines but will not be higher than necessary to remedy the damage caused to [EU] carriers. …
