New flavors at MAKS 2003: Russia's biennial air show attracts an international presence.(Air Show)

While it suffered from more than its share of organizational and logistical hiccups, the 2003 Moscow Air Salon in August arguably may have been the most successful of the six biennial shows held to date. With a cast of participants that included the US Air Force, the event achieved a strong international flavoring. The crowd reacted favorably to first-ever flying demonstrations by Italy's flamboyant Frecce Tricolore and the French Air Force Patrouille de France. And in an occurrence that would have been unthinkable even two years ago, the USAF, having skipped the Paris Air Show in June, demonstrated both the F15 and F-16 here.

Apart from those military types, other aircraft making their first MAKS appearance included an A320 for Armavia and the Boeing Business Jet. …
