Singapore Airlines Group, severely stung by the SARS-related travel downturn, ordered the first job cuts at the company in 20 years. On June 20, the carrier said that a total of 414 Singapore-based employees representing 1.5% of home staff were to be released amid rumors that the final number may be considerably higher.

In announcing the layoffs, new CEO Chew Choon Seng declared, "It is clear we have to cure this financial hemorrhage. We cannot simply wait, do nothing and just hope that business will recover sooner rather than later."
