A popular topic of conversation at the Paris Air Show just past was the shape of the upcoming recovery. Not the if, but the when and the how of it all.

This is my fourth airline recession, three covered as a journalist after the collapse in the early 1970s steered me away from the actual flying part of the business. These experiences have taught us not to panic; as surely as day follows night, airline recessions end and good times return--one way or the other.

This time the shape of the good times on the far side of the recession will be "the other." Actually, the last time was different too. North America came out of the early 1990s with fewer Majors and its airlines with a new sense of limitations. …
