EC given power to negotiate open skies with US. (News Briefs).(Brief Article)

The European Commission received its long-sought mandate for negotiating a Transatlantic Common Aviation Area with the US on June 5 after the EU Transport Council agreed to a package of measures that transfers responsibility for conducting key air transport negotiations to the EC. "This is a historic decision. Today we have reached a deal that will enable the European Union to assert itself at international level," said EU Transport Commissioner Loyola de Palacio. "We aim to launch negotiations with the US within a month."

While embracing its victory, the EC recognized that in view of the immense and extraordinary task of renegotiating and amending hundreds of existing bilateral agreements, member states should be allowed "to negotiate agreements under the control of a system of coordination and on the basis of standard texts. …
