World airline losses topped $11 billion last year ... passenger traffic fell 18.5% in April. (News Briefs).(Brief Article)

Reflecting the crippling impact of SAPS on traffic to, from and within the Asia/Pacific region, global international passenger traffic (RPKs) plummeted 18.5% in April compared with the year-ago period, according to IATA. Preliminary figures indicated that Asia/Pacific carriers' RPKs collapsed 44.8% in the month. With ASKs declining only 12.6%, average load factor for the group was a meager 48%, down 28 points from April 2002.

"The unprecedented combination of crises--war in Iraq and SAPS--has had a disastrous impact on international air transport, in a magnitude approaching that of 9/11," declared LATA DG and CEO Giovanni Bisignani on the eve of the LATA AGM in early June. …
