US Transportation Security Administration said it will reduce its screener workforce by 6,000 by Sept. 30 and make other changes as part of an effort to become a "mote efficient and effective security agency." At the end of March, the screener workforce totaled 55,600. When the agency was created by Congress after 9/11, the size of the workforce necessary to carry out screening functions was estimated at around 33,000.
