The proposed alliance between Qantas and Air New Zealand got a boost in May after Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport John Anderson urged the country's Competition and Consumer Commission to consider the "medium- to long-term need for strengthening regional aviation." The ACCC in a draft opinion opposed the alliance, as did the NZ Commerce Commission.

Another senior Australian official, Federal Treasurer Peter Costello, also said the commercial and equity tie-up should be approved provided the carriers can repackage the partnership plan satisfactorily. …
