In this airline business we tend to take it as a basic tenet of faith that the ability of people and goods to travel freely over long distances, spanning continents and oceans, is one of the cornerstones upon which global commerce is built. Lately it has become increasingly obvious that this view is not shared widely outside the industry, or if it is, not at a cognitive level that translates into attitudes and actions. Sadly, the industry has nor been making its case with enough vigor to introduce it into the calculations of those considering what new impediments to heap upon airlines.

The connection between travel and world economic vitality seems self-evident. On the most direct level, the travel and tourism industry in itself often is called the largest single business in the world. …
