Atlantic Coast Airlines' recent decision to furlough 87 pilots is in line with an ongoing effort to reduce costs across the board by 10%-12%, a company spokesperson said. In addition to the furloughs, ACA will implement a hiring freeze, eliminate or reduce bonus programs and cur pay by 5%-10% for all salaried employees. "Everything is in a period of uncertainty right now," said spokesperson Rick deLisi. "It's part of our overall cost reduction." Most of the furloughed pilots are in the "training pipeline," he said.

ACA, which participates in the United Express and Delta Connection codeshare programs, has 42 CRJs on firm order from Bombardier but has been unable to obtain financing for them, in part because of United Airlines' uncertain future. …
