The coming of the Australian summer and its attendant weather conditions brought with it both severe fires and floods. The beginning of the year saw New South Wales suffering from its worst floods in half a century following a week of often very heavy rain. Many members of the New South Wales community had been trapped by the floodwaters, including around 1,000 music fans who had been in attendance at a four day festival taking place within the state. According to Australian authorities, communities in Queensland and the Northern Territories were also seriously affected and had to receive help from the emergency services.
