* Fife Fire Brigade has carried out a series of nuclear exercises spread over six successive weekends and involving wholetime, retained and auxiliary personnel. Firemaster A J Greenslade said: "There have been plenty of snags but these were offset by the enthusiasm and interest shown by all concerned."

* Four members of Northumberland Fire Brigade have been awarded the British Empire Medal for Gallantry. They are honoured for their part in tackling a burning railway wagon loaded with explosives.

* Seventeen appliances, including two turntable ladders, from Lancashire, Cheshire, Manchester and Oldham fought a serious fire at a fabric printing mill in Ashton-under-Lyme. …
