WL Gore & Associates (UK) Ltd has helped fund the development of SOPHIE--the first female form research manikin used for the testing of safety clothing worn by female firefighters.

SOPHIE (which stands for System Objective Protection against Heat In Emergencies) has been designed and developed by BTTG Fire Technology Services, and follows on from three generations of the male form RALPH (Research Aim Longer Protection against Heat), developed since 1992.

The manikins feature more than 120 heat sensors covering all areas of the body. Dressed in the PPE to be tested, they are subjected to full gas flame envelopment for a specified length of time. The outcome is a burn prediction print-out, recording the location and duration of predicted injuries according to five levels: none, pain, 1st degree burn, 2nd degree burn, 3rd degree burn. …
