THE LOCK MARKET, WHICH WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1974, suffered extensive damage and large crowds of people out for the evening had to be swiftly evacuated as flames shot into the sky.

When the first crews arrived they discovered a rapidly-developing fire and quickly ordered more resources to the incident. Over 100 firefighters battled in hot temperatures to bring the blaze under control. Eye witnesses said that the flames were over 30 feet high and the heat caused windows in surrounding buildings to be blown out.

The fire damaged market stalls, homes and two pubs. Despite the severity of the blaze no one was injured or needed to be rescued. Firefighters worked alongside the police and market security staff to evacuate over 550 people, including around 100 local residents who were asked to leave their homes as heavy smoke filled the area. …
