* FIRE featured the recent Smithfield fire on its front cover, in its editorial comment and on a two page spread. The incident was instrumental in the introduction of BA Control procedures. At the Smithfield fire large numbers of London firemen in oxygen BA were committed, which clearly highlighted the short comings of knowing who was and who was not in the building.

* A householder in Norwich recently called the fire brigade when a water pipe burst and started to flood the bathroom. At a subsequent meeting of Norwich Council a 1 [pounds sterling] fine was imposed. The Committee Chairman said: "He should have known where the stop-cock was."

* Corydon Magistrates fined a fireman 1 [pounds sterling] for crossing a red traffic signal when proceeding to a fire. …
