* At a recent inquest into an accident which resulted in a fireman from Manchester Fire Brigade losing his life, the coroner said: "I understand that the automatic ladder was of German design and the chassis upon which it was carried was British. Is it possible that such combinations are unsatisfactory. "The coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death following the turntable ladder collapsing on a drill.

* The Chief Officer of Bristol City Fire Brigade has recently published his annual report. The chief notes that the brigade was called out 497 times, which is a decrease of 64 on the previous year. Seventeen calls were malicious false alarms and 314 were chimney fires. …
