Union leaps ahead with learning seminar: following the success of the Fire Brigades Union national Union Learning Fund (ULF) project which is promoting lifelong learning in the UK Fire and Rescue Service, the first FBU Union Learning Representatives seminar was hosted by the Fire Service College.(Lifelong Learning)

FIRE MINISTER ANGELA SMITH was the keynote speaker at the inaugural Union Learning Reps Seminar along with representatives from CFOA, the Fire Service College, the Learning and Skills Council and Unionlearn, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) learning organisation.

FBU President Ruth Winters welcomed over 50 delegates to the seminar who included union representatives from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Speaking on behalf of the union she spoke of the work that was taking place to encourage and support staff in learning and welcomed the partnerships that were enabling a lifelong learning culture in the Fire and Rescue Service. It was, she said, a very positive and progressive initiative that the FBU fully supported and acknowledged the work of the ULF project team and the role that ULRs are, and will have in the learning agenda.

Addressing the seminar, Angela Smith spoke of her passion for education and her delight at being given the opportunity to work closely with the Fire and Rescue Service during what she preferred to call "progress" rather than the "modernisation" period. …
