* At a recent fire in a hotel in the Paddington District of London, hook ladders were used to assist rescues. This was against the backdrop of campaigns to ban the use of this particular ladder clue to its inherent danger.

* Following questions in the House of Commons it has been stated that five brigades in England and Wales have no hotels or boarding houses awaiting inspection until the Fire Precautions Act 1971. The brigades were Cleveland, Mid Glamorgan, Shropshire, West Midlands and South Yorkshire.

* Two Dumfries and Galloway firemen have recently received Royal Humane Society Gallantry Testimonials. DO Ian Wright and Fireman David Stirling swam to an overturned boat to rescue two girls who were trapped beneath the boat in a pocket of air. …
