Maritime firefighting in the UK: Maritime Firefighting is entering a new era after the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and Fire and Rescue Services across the UK joined forces to strengthen their capabilities to respond to incidents involving fire, chemical hazards and rescues at sea.(Maritime Firefighting)


Rescue Services in England, Wales and Scotland have been working closely with the MCA to establish The Maritime Incident Response Group (MIRG), which is the result of a major cross-governmental project involving some of the principal organisations behind the UK's civil resilience (see FIRE July).

A similar project was formalised in Northern Ireland after the Fire and Rescue Service and the PICA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), ensuring effective cooperation between the two organisations.

Providing An Interagency Response

The government is currently working on a number of projects that drive the modernisation of the emergency services, encouraging agencies to form partnerships and to work together.
