The chain of care: UKRO Extrication Conference 2006: FIRE attended the UKRO Extrication Conference to discover more on the latest developments of road safety partnerships and accident prevention with an international flavour.(UKRO)

THIS YEAR THE EVENT WAS HELD at the Hotel Seattle, Brighton Marina and was well attended by delegates. Introductions were provided by CFO's Dave Webb, Des Pritchard and Charlie Hendry.

Minister Angela Smith provided some background to her position and emphasised how these days the Service can be viewed to have "more work on RTCs than fire".

The Minister highlighted road safety and problems such as joyriding in Northern Ireland before outlining the aims of government and the DCLG in particular. Ms Smith stated that the "Fire and Rescue Service needs to come home" as she spoke of the importance of partnership working; overcoming barriers and a better understanding of the work they do.

One of the main aims highlighted was community strategy and as the Minister explained, the FRS has a crucial role to play in "reducing risk to vulnerable people in society". This was juxtaposed with the need to engage young people in FRS work in order to change their lives, the Minister said. …
