Benefits of focus on fire prevention recognised by committee: Department for Communities and Local Government statement.(News)

The government welcomes the House of Commons Select Committee's recognition that the shift of emphasis from responding to fires to preventing them starting, is a positive change and is already proving its worth with the continued reduction in fire deaths.

'However the government recognises that there is much still to be done in the face of the new challenges that face the Fire and Rescue Service in the 21st century.

'The department is working closely with the Chief Fire Officers' Association and other partners to improve equality and diversity with the Fire and Rescue Service. The current campaign to raise awareness among women that the Fire and Rescue Service could be the career for them is showing early signs of success. …
