Campaign launched to protect schools from fire.(News)

As the summer holidays continue, a campaign to ensure that more schools are protected from fire has been launched recently.

Wise up to Fire is urging more local education authorities across England and Wales to adopt a policy of installing fire sprinklers in schools: currently less than a quarter of the 172 authorities have such a policy and fewer than one per cent of schools are protected in this way.

Fire--whether accidental or deliberate--is a major problem in schools, with the costs running into tens of millions every year. Most worryingly, every year there are a number of casualties, and the fear is that there will eventually be a fatality. Each year, there are well over 1,000 fires in schools, with the more occurring during the spring and after the summer break. …
