Accolade for former Kent chief.(PEOPLE PROFILE)

Peter Coombs, from Canterbury, has been presented with a medal for recognition at Kent's Service Headquarters, in Maidstone recently.

Created to acknowledge those who have served KFRS in an outstanding and exemplary manner, the original Kent medal was approved for issue on March 18, 1986 and since then has only been awarded to 19 people.

The award may be given to wholetime, part-time, professional staff and members who, in the opinion of Kent's current Chief Fire Officer Charlie Hendry, deserve appropriate recognition.

Mr Coombs, who retired earlier this year, joined the Fire and Rescue Service in 1974 as a firefighter. Subsequent promotions saw him take on a multitude of roles including Divisional Commander, then Deputy Chief Fire Officer in 1992 and finally Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive in 2000. …
