Fire and Ice Challenge 2006.(News)

Last year a crazy group of firefighters from Cornwall County Fire Brigade thought it would be a fabulous idea to trek 150k across the Vatnajokil Glacier in Iceland, to raise money for The Fire Service National Benevolent Fund and Children with Leukaemia.

The team included: firefighters Dave Diment, Ray Filbey, Simon Martyn, Tim Edwards, Mark Kass, Phil Hoare and James Marks.

The group planned the trip for June 2006 so needed to start raising money in 2005. They organised social evenings, sponsored abseils and looked for donations of money and/or equipment from businesses to assist. It was a success and the trip was booked. They started to train for the gruelling adventure. Below are snippets from the diary they made during their 11 day vacation:

Day 1-June 6, 2006

We departed Cornwall at 2230 heading for Gatwick via Exeter service's where we collected Mark Kass and the BBC Presenter Janine Jenson. Janine was to accompany us for some of the trip.

Day 2--June 7, 2006

Following some sweet talking to the check in staff to secure safe and free transport for our expedition kit (more than your average baggage allowance) we had a while before boarding, it's amazing the positions you can get yourself into whilst trying to sleep on airport chairs. …
