Hants search and rescue exercise hailed a success: Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service's Urban Search and Rescue Team is already regarded as one of the UK's most advanced teams and a recent exercise saw the team take part in a simulated collapsed structure exercise at the Old Manor Bakeries site in Leigh Road, Eastleigh.(Special Services)

THE SITE IS CURRENTLY UNDER demolition for redevelopment and the exercise was part of an intensive four-day training and assessment programme designed to give the team the opportunity to practice and develop their specialist skills in a realistic environment.

The 33-strong team is part of the government's national initiative to ensure a capability to carry out international search and rescue operations following catastrophic events from terrorist attacks such as the Twin Towers, or other major incidents such as the Buncefield oil depot fire.

The team has specialist-enhanced equipment over and above the normal fire appliances, including search dogs and technical search and rescue equipment for victim location within collapsed buildings and rubble piles. …
