Cleveland fire brigade carries out 50,000th home fire safety check.(News)

Cleveland Fire Brigade is celebrating its 50,000th Home Fire Safety Check with a visit to a resident in Marske.

Firefighters will visit the home of Mrs Joan Hornby to carry out the 50,000th check. Chief Fire Officer John Doyle will also attend to present her with some flowers and a small gift. Redcar MP Vera Baird, who is supporting the scheme, will also be visiting the resident.

The brigade launched its Home Fire Safety Check scheme in June 2003 and aims to carry out a Home fire Safety Check in every home throughout Middlesbrough, Stockton, Hartlepool and Redcar within five years.

The check, aimed at reducing the risk of fire in homes, involves firefighters visiting a resident to talk about fire safety, highlight any fire risks, help make an escape plan in case of a fire and fit smoke alarms, or replace the battery with a ten year one if alarms are already fitted. …
