Fewer fires in the home, fewer fires overall and hoax calls attended almost halved, were just some of the highlights of 2005/06 for the London Fire Brigade.

These success stories and others were revealed in a new report, Our Performance 2005/06.

During 2005/06 nearly 40,000 smoke alarms were installed by brigade staff or their partners and targets set for community safety work by fire station staff were exceeded. The number of home fire safety checks completed last year was 28,630, more than double the 11,349 figure in 2004/05. Home fire safety checks are a free service in which firefighters look for fire hazards in people's homes using a checklist, offer fire safety advice and fit a smoke alarm for free if necessary. …
