Dignity key to disabling inertia on diversity: as the Select Committee report on the Fire and Rescue Service condemns progress on equality and diversity, FIRE calls for progressive discussion and partnership to overcome deficiencies.(Viewpoint)

Given the publication of the Select Committee report on the Fire and Rescue Service it is some co-incidence that this issue of FIRE contains such broad coverage of equality and diversity issues: from the government's recruitment campaign to the duties facing authorities under an amendment to the Disability Discrimination Act 2005.

Although the findings of the report came as no surprise the timing of the publication is fortuitous, particularly in reference to wider diversity issues. The Disability Equality Duty (see pg 33), which will come into force in December 2006, will place a duty on all public bodies to actively promote disability equality--similar to the duty to promote race equality. …
