* In July 1956 FIRE cost 1s6d (7.5p).

* Following the recent death of a fireman whilst undertaking hook ladder drills, the Home Office is to conduct an extensive enquiry into their use. The enquiry will balance the requirements for hook ladders within operational use and as a training aid against their inbuilt dangers. The enquiry will also consider the campaign currently underway by the FBU to have hook ladder drills ended and the ladders themselves fazed out.

* Thirty-five members of the London Fire Brigade received hospital treatment following a fire which occurred recently at the Goodge Street deep shelter. One hunded and eleven appliances and 450 officers and men were required over a protracted period to fight the fire, which has been described as London's most difficult for many years. …
