Ship fire at sea tests new maritime incident response group procedures.(News)

The Chief Fire Officers' Association has congratulated the Maritime Incident Response Group (MIRG) for its speedy and efficient response to the major fire on the MV Calypso in the English Channel.

Launched on April 20, the MIRG is the UK's first specialised fire and rescue service for incidents at sea and is one of the first of its kind in the world.

At 0347 on May 6, the cruise ship MV Calypso, operated by Louis Cruise Line

UK and on passage from Tilbury to the Channel Islands put out a May Day call requesting assistance because of a major engine room fire. A trained assessment team from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was immediately flown out to the vessel. …
