New Fire Minister puts women first.(Cabinet reshuffle)

In her first public engagement as the new Minister for the Fire and Rescue Service, Angela Smith met some of the women from all over the country who are working as operational firefighters.

Ms Smith was at London Fire Brigade's training ground in Southwark at the launch of a new national advertising campaign, sponsored by the Department for Communities and Local Government, aimed at raising awareness amongst women of the possibilities of a frontline Fire and Rescue Service career.

The Minister urged would-be recruits not to be put off by this macho stereotype: "Firefighting is not a job open only to men. In a modern Fire and Rescue Service we need recruits who are physically and mentally confident. …
