* FIRE for February 1981 cost 60p.

* It is reported that in the year ending December 31, 1980, 1,096 persons lost their lives in fires in the UK. This is the highest number since records were started. They show an increase of 16 per cent over 1979.

* A world record has been claimed by Firemen from Wigston, Leicestershire. They pushed a metal wheeled escape ladder round Abbey Park covering over 182 miles. The effort was in support of the Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

* To mark his retirement as HM Chief Inspector the late Sir Kenneth Holland contributes a specially commissioned article to FIRE. Sir Kenneth notes he joined the Service as a Retained Fireman. …
