West Yorkshire's Fire Chief has made an impassioned plea for sprinklers to be fitted in all new and refurbished schools.

Phil Toase warned that it was only a question of time before lives were lost in a school fire.

"Fire in school buildings is not uncommon but we are starting to see an escalating number of fires deliberately started during school hours," said Mr Toase.

More than 70 per cent of all fires in schools are now put down to arson. On average, 20 schools a week are damaged or destroyed by fire-setters.

"The majority of schools built prior to 1980 have very poor fire resistance and sadly even new buildings are not always fitted with sprinkler systems. …
