Supporting women in the Fire Service: networking Women in the Fire Service (NWFS) says it has a key rote to play in assisting fire and rescue services with recruitment and retention of women firefighters, and adopt a multi-faceted approach to do this.(Recruitment and Retention)

IT IS PART OF OUR MISSION statement to contribute to developing a thriving Service, which actively recruits women and supports them in achieving their full potential We aim to contribute to achieving a gender, ethnicity and sexual orientation balance right across the rank and rote structure of the Service. We approach this challenge from many different angles.


NWFS actively supports services during recruitment campaigns and over the last 10 years we have worked with many brigades. Most recently, on April 8 this year, Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service ran a Positive Action Day in Cowley and the network was pleased to assist.

The agenda for the day was set to give women and members of minority ethnic groups an opportunity to learn more about the role of the modern firefighter. There were opportunities to try out the selection tests, to talk to people in a variety of roles about their jobs, from a whole time firefighter, a woman watch manager on the retained duty system, to a pregnant firefighter on light duties. …
