MY EARLY EXPERIENCE OF networking was one of sharing experience and professional knowledge in a semi-structured environment; challenging established perspectives and making contacts with those whose own knowledge and expertise I could tap into to compliment my own.

The Fire Service is a rich source of knowledge and experience, which if pooled can be used to develop up and coming managers and maintain 'shop floor' awareness for senior managers. The recently published consultation paper, Leadership Development Strategy for the Fire and Rescue Service, focused on the role of 'transformational leadership' to develop not only organisations but also leaders within.
