Salary scheme for Devon's retained firefighters.(News)

Retained firefighters in Devon will be paid a salary rather than receive a retainer and calf-out fee under a radical new scheme put forward by Devon Fire and Rescue Service.

The county, which has the highest number of retained firefighters in England, has become one of the first fire and rescue services in the country to introduce a salary based scheme.

CFO Paul Young said: "This is a huge step towards bringing the Fire and Rescue Service into the 21st century.

"The scheme will improve work/life balance and be more family friendly for our retained firefighters. As a salaried scheme, personnel will receive regular payments and a guaranteed income."

The salaried scheme has been introduced partly in response to a national agreement for fire and rescue services to reduce the weekly cover period for retained firefighters to a maximum of 120 hours. …
