Motorway blaze brings Essex to a standstill; a motorway was closed as a vehicle fire involving acetylene cylinders closed the busy M11, causing chaos to travellers, including those on their way to Stansted Airport.(Incident Report)

FIREFIGHTERS FROM ESSEX attended a vehicle blaze which closed the busy M11 motorway for over 24 hours.

Initially called just after 0500 on February 25 to a van on fire, crews from Harlow and Loughton arrived to find a recovery vehicle alight. Information was received that two gas cylinders were on board, one possibly being an acetylene cylinder. The fire had also spread to an adjacent HGV carrying 20 tons of general cargo.

Fire teams stood by outside the 200 metre exclusion zone, on what was an eerie scene. The M11 motorway stood silent and empty. Not a car or any noise to disturb the morning. The only noise, which could be heard for quite a distance was the occasional 'pop' of burning rubber or plastic from the vehicles involved. …
