Commitment for new legislation to protect firefighters made by ministers.(News)

As a result of the high profile campaign, calling for specific legislation to be introduced to protect firefighters and other emergency service workers, ministers have made a commitment to support a specific offence, in addition to introducing a number of other non-legislative measures.

The campaign, which has been run in conjunction with the Manchester Evening News and supported by the Local Government Association, chairs of fire authorities from all over the country and CFOA supported Alan William's MP Private Members Bill The Bill was due for its second reading recently. Following discussions with Mr Williams and CFO Barry Dixon, ministers have agreed to the following:

* To support the introduction of a new offence dealing with obstructing or impeding an emergency service worker responding to an emergency. …
