* The Lord Mayor of Southampton recently hosted the annual dinner of Southampton Fire Brigade. In his after dinner speech the Mayor said: "Southampton owes a great deal to its chief and to its fire brigade.

Developments in the port and the erection of new premises and dwellings in the town are all adding to the responsibilities of the brigade. The efficiency of our brigade is unquestioned at a national level".

* It is reported that Portsmouth City Fire Brigade is unable to crew two fire engines at the same time.

One possible plan is to encourage young men to enter Portsmouth Fire Brigade and transfer them at the age of 21 years into the better paid police force, and then use them as police firemen. …
