* The first large scale exercise by a mobile fire column, the modern equivalent of what was so successful during the last war, has recently undertaken a major exercise simulating conditions likely to be encountered in a future war. The column drove through cities and country lanes in the west country with full escort. Many lessons were learnt with regard to the need for fitness, both physical and mental by firemen. The column set out to do an extremely difficult job and did it successfully.

* Six hundred and eighteen candidates undertook the recent qualifying examination for the rank of Station Officer. Only 54 were successful, the lowest percentage for some years.

* The Home Secretary has accepted recommendations by the National Joint Council for local authority fire brigades for increases in the pay of members of all fire brigades below the rank of assistant chief fire officer. …
