* The Editor in Chief of FIRE Mr Harry Klopper states: 'The betrayal of the Fire Service started years ago and inevitably led to the first ever fireman's strike in 1977. Not only did matters not improve after the settlement, but hardly had the men returned to full duty than the dismantlers started a campaign to divide and conquer, to make cuts in individual areas and to try to go back on agreements made to settle the strike ... alarmist? By no means, for years the alarm bells have been sounding'.

* The Fire Brigades Union has requested an urgent meeting with the Home Secretary to discuss the decision by the employers to withdraw from the 1977 pay formula which guaranteed to maintain firemens' pay in the top quarter of skilled workers earnings. …
