TRAINING IS BUT JUST ONE aspect of the 'safe firefighter' concept, along with protective clothing, safe procedures and appropriate resources. But without adequate and targeted training the firefighter and our communities are at much greater risk.

The FBU leadership of the late fifties placed training at the core of its campaign for a 'Service of the 60s' and also identified the link between skilled workers and good conditions of service including pay. They argued for the creation of a Joint Training Committee (JTC) of the CFBAC and eventually saw that delivered through Holroyd with qualified firefighter pay being delivered through Cunningham a few years later. The campaign of the union had widespread support from the employer associations, brigade managers and government and although the pace of change and the price to be paid for it may have caused differences the aim of achieving a well trained workforce was shared. …
