THE ONLY CONSTANT IS CHANGE. A phrase that will ring true with everyone involved with the UK Fire Service and wider interested stakeholders. Phrases and issues such as community cohesion, Local area agreements, the modernisation agenda, are now common parlance. Everywhere we look there is innovation, partnership working and, in some cases, upheaval as we grow and mature as organisations and a UK Service.

But are we getting everything right? I am a great supporter of, and believer in, the wider community safety agenda and the Service's involvement in that agenda. There is much evidence that our work in prevention and protection is really making a difference. For example, since a major injection of resources into community safety from Hertfordshire County Council in to my own service in 1999/2000 there have been significant reductions in fires, fire deaths and injuries. …
